For more information on this author or work, see number: 2164

Babes and his assistant, Sion, were particularly interested in pellagra because it was a great problem in Sion's homeland of Romania. In this detailed treatise on the disease, Babes and Sion give a brief history of pellagra, and discuss its demographics, etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, and pathology. The authors had few therapeutic recommendations and, like many physicians of their day, supported Lombroso's theory (see No. 2000) which held that pellagra was caused by a toxin produced by the growth of an organism on maize. The work appeared in Part II of Volume XXIV of Nothnagel's Specielle Pathologie und Therapie (see No. 2039).
