CESARE LOMBROSO (1835-1909) Pensiero e meteore. Fratelli Dumolard 1878 x, 227 pp., 3 col. fold. plates, tables. 21.9 cm.
The Italian psychiatrist, criminologist, and anthropologist Lombroso served on the faculty at Turin for many years and is regarded as the founder of the science of criminology. Genio e follia (Milan, 1864) and L'uomo delinquente (Milan, 1876) were his most important works. They were widely acclaimed, translated into many languages, and adopted as textbooks in medical and law schools. In this, one of Lombroso's lesser known works, emphasis is placed on delineating the effects that weather, season, climate, altitude, and heavenly bodies have on physical and mental health. The two appendices by Augusto Tamburini (1848-1919) and Giovanni Marinelli (1846-1900) discuss the effects of altitude on health in two areas of high elevation in Italy.
