JOHN GRANT MALCOLMSON (d. 1844) Clinical remarks on some cases of liver abscess presenting externally. John J. Haswell 1839 43, 31, 36 pp. 22 cm.

The Indian Medical Service was formed in 1764 and it played an important part in the development of knowledge about tropical diseases as Great Britain expanded its influence throughout the world. Malcolmson, a surgeon of the Indian Medical Service, made an important contribution when he published his A practical essay on the history and treatment of beriberi (Madras, 1835) in which he summarized all that was known of the disease during his time. In the present work Malcolmson comments that "there are few subjects less understood, and regarding which more incorrect notions are entertained, than the history and treatment of abscesses in the liver" (p. 1). His purpose in writing this treatise was to attempt to correct these misunderstandings by presenting the results of his observations in twelve selected cases. Malcolmson presents detailed histories of each patient in which he follows their symptoms, treatment, and autopsy results.
