A neurophysiologist from Yorkshire, Thomas Laycock’s career was as varied as his interests. Laycock’s first employment was as an apothecary to the York County Hospital. He was also an instructor at the York Medical School and was eventually the chair of medicine in Edinburgh. In addition to nervous diseases (hysteria) in women, Laycock also wrote papers on the use of saliva for diagnostic purposes and the prevention of bedsores.
