Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1756

BERNHARD VON LANGENBECK (1810-1887) Vorlesungen über Akiurgie. August Hirschwald 1888 xxiii [3] 643 pp., front. (port.). 24.1 cm.

Langenbeck was one of Germany's great surgeons during the time when surgery in that country was developing under such men as Diffenbach, Stromeyer, and Conrad Langenbeck (see No. 1320), uncle of Bernhard. He was not only a great orthopedic surgeon, being known for his daring and successful operations for bone resection, but he was also a plastic surgeon of note, devising innovative new methods for the repair of cleft palate. Langenbeck was one of the founders of the German Society of Surgery, and he founded the Archiv für klinische Chirurgie (often called Langenbeck's Archiv). In addition to being a distinguished surgeon, he was also known as a teacher of many of Germany's great surgeons, such as Billroth (see No. 1952). Most of Langenbeck's work appeared in the current medical periodicals of his day. This book, a summary of his work, represents the first time an attempt was made to publish his contributions in book form.
