This noted German surgeon and anatomist became professor of anatomy and surgery at Göttingen was named surgeon-general of the Hanoverian Army in 1814. He founded the surgery and ophthalmology clinic at Göttingen in 1807 and is especially remembered for devising an operation to construct an artificial pupil by implanting a slip of iris in a corneal incision. Langenbeck was very active as a medical writer and the present treatise on hernias is considered to be one of his more important works. Seven of the plates illustrate the anatomy of various types of hernias and one plate depicts a truss and its use.
