CHRISTIAN ALBERT THEODOR BILLROTH (1829-1894) Die allgemeine chirurgische Pathologie und Therapie, in fünfzig Vorlesungen. G. Reimer 1863 xx, 712 pp., illus. 24.1 cm.
Billroth may be regarded as the founder of modern abdominal surgery through his pioneering work in resection of the esophagus and removal of the upper part of the stomach and portions of the bowel. For many years he was at the Vienna School of Surgery; because of his own work and that of his many eminent pupils, he must probably be considered the most important single influence on the development of modern surgical knowledge. This scarce first edition, cheaply printed and, strangely, not in such great collections as those of Osler, Cushing, Waller, or Orr, is a landmark in the development of modern surgery and was translated into ten languages.
