After six years as professor of anatomy at King's College, Mayo was appointed to the professorship of physiology and pathological anatomy in 1836. The first edition of the present work was published at London that same year. A popular author with a well deserved scholarly reputation, Mayo's work was presented to an American audience in this volume of Dunglison's American medical library. A thorough study of pathological conditions throughout the body, Mayo's treatise provides many illustrative case histories.
