After Buchan moved to London, he continued to write and published several other books dealing with various aspects of the preservation of health. This work was first published in London in 1803 and was reprinted the following year in Philadelphia. It went through several editions in the United States and England and was translated into several other European languages. In the book, Buchan provides practical advice on health matters to women before marriage, rules of conduct during pregnancy and childbirth, and recommendations for the nursing and rearing of children. An appendix is largely a reprint of William Cadogan's An essay upon nursing, and the management of children (see No. 911).
