Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 911

WILLIAM CADOGAN (1711-1797) An essay upon nursing, and the management of children, from their birth to three years of age. Printed for J. Roberts 1748 2nd ed. 34 pp. 20.1 cm.

Cadogan was born in London, studied at Oxford, and received his medical degree at Leiden during the declining years of Boerhaave's (see No. 739 ff.) career. He maintained an active practice, for a time in Bristol and later in London. Because of the beneficial influence of this brief essay on the handling of infants, he was appointed physician to the Foundling Hospital in London. Published at a time when sensible practices of child care were largely neglected, the pamphlet became very popular and went through eight editions during the next eighteen years.
