Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 739
HERMANN BOERHAAVE (1668-1738) Orationes academicae. 1701-1731? 20.6 cm.
Boerhaave studied for the ministry but, after promotion to doctor of philosophy, he took up the study of medicine, chemistry, and botany. He was appointed lecturer at the University of Leiden in 1701 and there began a career as one of the most admired teachers and best-known clinicians who ever lived. He wrote several important and lasting books, but he was first and last a clinician and a faithful Hippocratist who put the care of the patient above all considerations of theory. His influence on medical teaching and practice was enormous, as students flocked to his lectures from all over Europe and carried away his precepts and teachings to other medical schools and to their own practices. This collection contains all eight of the public Orationes academicae delivered by Boerhaave in his lengthy career as a teacher and academician. All orations but the last are in rare first editions.
