This collection of Hunter's papers and essays was prepared by Richard Owen (see No. 1669 ff.). One of the founders of modern comparative anatomy, Owen was a surgeon, curator, and conservator, and he spent several years cataloguing and studying the Hunterian Collection. The material in this work came from Hunter's original manuscripts and was copied by William Clift (1775-1849), conservator of the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons, who had worked with Hunter for many years. Unfortunately, the bulk of the manuscripts were destroyed by Hunter's brother-in-law, Sir Everard Home (see No. 1148 ff.).
