Desault began his studies at the University of Pau and completed his medical degree at Bordeaux. He spent the following four years in Paris studying and attending the lectures of Du Verney (see No. 665) and Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708). He then returned to Bordeaux where he spent the remainder of his career in medical practice and teaching at the University. The present work is one of several medical treatises he wrote and also appeared as a volume in his collected works--Dissertations de médecine (Paris, 1735-1738). In the work, Desault discusses the causes, symptoms, and methods of treatment for gout.
