A Latin translation of Traité de l'organe de l'ouie, believed to have been made by Du Verney, appeared only a year after the work's first publication in French, in order to encourage wide circulation. The work appeared in several anthologies during Du Verney's lifetime but a new edition was not published until after his death. Then, within the next twenty years, new editions appeared in German, Dutch, and English. The present edition is the first English translation of the book and was made by a London surgeon, John Marshall (fl. 1730).
