In 1703 Boerhaave declined the offer of a professorship of medicine at Groningen. The governors of Leiden, worried that he might leave, increased his salary by fifty percent and promised him the first vacant professorship on the faculty. Dedicated with gratitude to the seven governors of the university, Boerhaave spoke on the iatrophysical basis of medicine.
