Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 583

NICOLAAS HOBOKEN (1632-1678) Anatomia secundinae humanae. Apud Johannem Ribbium 1669 221 [11] pp., [10] leaves of plates (9 fold.), front. (port.). 15.1 cm.

Born at Utrecht, Hoboken also studied there, receiving degrees in philosophy in 1658 and in medicine in 1662. The following year he became professor of mathematics and medicine at the Athenaeum in Steinfurt and soon thereafter became physician-in-ordinary to one of the local nobility. In 1669 he relocated to Harderwyk where he taught and practiced until 1672. At that time, he returned to Utrecht because of the approach of a French invasion force. The present work, dedicated to Tulp (see No. 464), is one of the earliest treatises to be devoted solely to the human placenta and fetal membranes. The later half of the work contains eighteen letters concerning generation written to several of his contemporaries including Thomas Bartholin (see No. 512 ff.). The excellent plates were drawn by the author from his own preparations.
