This important work on the developmental stages of the chicken firmly established Malpighi's reputation as an embryologist. The four plates accompanying the text far surpass previous work in this area and show the development of such fine structures as the neural groove, cerebral vesicles, aortic arches, and the optic vesicles. Also included with this treatise are seven letters between Malpighi and Henry Oldenburg, secretary of the Royal Society of London.
