For more information on this author or work, see number: 485

Sir Geoffrey Keynes (1887-1982), the well-known author and expert bibliographer, has dedicated the present work to the memory of Sir William Osler (see No. 2120 ff.), one of Browne's greatest admirers. The work was begun a number of years before Osler's death and his assistance and encouragement are acknowledged by Keynes. An exhaustive bibliography, Keynes covers all of Browne's works as well as books that imitated both Religio medici (see No. 485) and Pseudodoxia epidemica (see No. 487), even including those that were forerunners of the latter work. In addition, the works of Browne's eldest son, Edward (1642-1708) are included as is an account of the compilation of Simon Wilkin's (1790-1862) edition of Browne's collected works. The illustrations include a frontispiece portrait of Browne and his wife and reproductions of thirty-six title pages from Browne's works. This copy was once owned by the famous Yale University physiologist and medical historian, John Farquhar Fulton (1899-1960), and contains his bookplate and marginal notes.
