Fabricius prepared this excellent treatise on gunshot wounds, although he had not had extensive personal experience in military campaigning. However, he had treated many such cases and so was well qualified to chronicle his experiences. He believed in rational treatment of these injuries which included setting of fractured bones, removing foreign bodies, and alleviating pain as much as possible. Fabricius also recommended adequate sleep, a sound diet, and careful regulation of room temperature. An inventive surgeon, in this text he developed and described an instrument for extracting musket balls from wounds.
