Marco Antonio, another member of the distinguished Montagnana family whose male descendants taught at Padua for over two centuries (see No. 124), was professor of surgery at Padua from 1545 to 1570. In this early work on ulcers, tumors, gangrene, and cancer, he discusses the etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of these diseases in considerable detail. Montagnana relied heavily on ancient authorities and frequently cites Galen, Rhazes, Avicenna, and Celsus.
