JODOCUS LOMMIUS (ca. 1500-ca. 1564) Medicinalium observationum libri tres. Ex officina Gulielmi Sylvii 1560 [8] 129 [3] ll. 14.7 cm.
Lommius, a native of Holland, may have studied medicine at Paris where he was known to have been a friend of Fernel (see No. 219 ff.). He served as town physician at Doornik in Flanders and about 1560 moved to Brussels. Some authorities believe that he was physician to King Philip II of Spain and that he died in Madrid. Lommius was the author of three medical works all of which remained popular until well into the eighteenth century. He employed a rational approach to the practice of medicine and therapeutics, and his writing style was highly readable. The present work appeared in many Latin editions as well as in the German, French, and English (see No. 237) languages. In the first book Lommius discusses diseases that afflict the entire body and in the second book he concentrates on maladies that afflict only specific parts of the body. In the final book he discusses general concepts of disease as well as diagnosis and prognosis.
