For more information on this author or work, see number: 2296

Kanavel completed his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and later graduated from its medical school with honors. He spent his academic career on its faculty and was for many years professor of surgery and chairman of the department. He was an internationally known authority on infections of the hand as well as plastic and restorative surgery of the injured or infected hand. He published the first edition of this definitive work on the subject in 1912 and, in this sixth edition, has so thoroughly revised and enlarged it that it is practically a new book. The many drawings, photographs, and X-rays add greatly to understanding the textual material. Kanavel's well-known protégé, Sumner L. Koch (1888-1976), who carried on his work, has inscribed this copy to John Martin. It was at the suggestion of Koch that the portrait of Martin which appears at the beginning of this book was painted and placed in the John Martin Rare Book Room of the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
