The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2296

ALLEN BUCKNER KANAVEL (1874-1938) Infections of the hand. Lea & Febiger [1912] xiii [17]-447 pp., 133 illus. 23.4 cm.

Kanavel served as professor and chief of the department of surgery at Northwestern University Medical School for many years. He was a general surgeon but was especially interested in infections and injuries of the hand. His special involvement with the hand led him to write this book, which has become a classic in American surgical literature. This work for the first time puts into clear perspective the relationship between the special anatomy of the human hand and the results of improper or no treatment for infections and injuries. Many of the basic treatment guidelines developed by Kanavel are still being used today in modern surgery. Kanavel's book was popular and went through six editions, the last being in 1933.
