Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2233

JULIUS MANNABERG (1860-1941) Die Malaria-Parasiten. Alfred Hölder 1893 vi [2] 195 [9] pp., 4 col. plates. 23.3 cm.

Mannaberg, one of Nothnagel's (see No. 2039) many noteworthy students and assistants, studied medicine at Vienna and was head of the outpatient department of internal medicine at the Vienna Polyclinic for many years. Although he made a number of contributions to bacteriology and parasitology, Mannaberg is best known for his studies of malaria. During the first three summers of the 1890s, Mannaberg traveled in Istria, Dalmatia, Croatia, and Slavonia where he studied malaria. The present work resulted from that research. In the book Mannaberg set forth his theory that the malaria was likely an airborne disease rather than spread by water as postulated by Laveran (see No. 2087).
