The present work is a translation of the first Russian edition of this important treatise (see No. 2129). The book was translated and edited by Gleb Vassilievitch von Anrep (1891-1955), a friend, student, and coworker of Pavlov's. Pavlov counted "it a great stroke of luck for the book that the preparation of the English edition was carried out entirely under the supervision of . . . Dr. Anrep, formerly an active collaborator in the work described on these pages" (Author's preface).
