AUGUSTE HENRI FOREL (1848-1931) Die sexuelle Frage. E. Reinhardt 1905 viii, 587 pp. 22.8 cm.
Equally renowned as neurologist, psychiatrist, and entomologist, Forel played a large part in bringing mental health into the realm of scientific investigation. He was one of the earliest scientists to make histological preparations of specimens of the human brain and, during his tenure at Zurich as professor of psychiatry, he formulated independently the concept of cellular and functional units (later termed the neuron theory). Forel also pioneered the use of hypnotism as a psychiatric diagnostic aid and contributed toward the understanding of alcoholism. He decided to retire in 1893 in order to devote more time to his entomological studies, especially of ants, and to the problems of social reform. This classic work on "the sexual question" was published the same year as Freud's Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie (see No. 2179), and is one of the first in-depth treatises on sexual hygiene. Translated into sixteen languages, it is Forel's best-known work.
