While Die Traumdeutung was virtually ignored when first published, this work on the theory of sexuality prompted a quick and largely negative response from the scientific community. Here Freud first articulates in detail his epochal theory of infant sexuality and its effect upon later development. It has been condemned; it has been used in clinical practice; it has been idolized to the point of cultism. Accepted or rejected, the arguments presented in this work have had a deep and lasting impact upon psychiatric thinking the world over.
