Neumann's work on syphilis ranks with that of Fournier (see No. 1980) as one of the period's foremost compilations on syphilis. Neumann prepared it especially for Nothnagel's (see No. 2039) Specielle Pathologie und Therapie and it was published as Volume XXIII in that series. Walter B. Shelley and John T. Crissey comment that Neumann's "truly monumental work was his treatise on syphilis, which entitles him to his place with Fournier as the master syphilologist" (Classics in clinical dermatology. Springfield, IL, 1953. p. 162).
