For more information on this author or work, see number: 1965

Topinard was a pioneering worker who helped mold anthropology into a modern science. He was a physician who practiced medicine at Paris until 1872 when he became curator of collections for the Sociéte d'Anthropologie. In 1880 he succeeded Broca (see No. 1912) as secretary-general of the society and later was professor at the École d'Anthropologie. This comprehensive monograph is based on a large accumulation of research data, which Topinard was able to condense into only one volume. Broca, Topinard's former teacher and mentor, wrote the book's preface and much of his anthropological work has been incorporated in the text. The many illustrations include depictions of Topinard's angle and line. His angle is formed by the anterior nasal spine and lines from the auricular point and the glabella. Topinard's line is a hypothetical line between the glabella and the point of the chin.
