PAUL TOPINARD (1830-1911) De l'ataxie locomotrice et en particulier de la maladie appelée ataxie locomotrice progressive. J.-B. Baillière et Fils 1864 viii, 575 pp. 22 cm.
Topinard was for many years curator of the museum of the Société d'Anthropologie de Paris. Although he was a physician and actively practiced medicine until he became curator in 1871, Topinard is best known in the literature as an anthropologist. However his interests extended well beyond anthropology and into the basic nature of disordered locomotion, one of nature's most complex neurological syndromes. This work received first prize in an essay contest sponsored by the Académie Impériale de Médecine. From 252 case histories, including many of his own patients, Topinard describes the clinical signs and pathological changes, both gross and microscopic, in progressive degenerative changes in the cerebrum, cerebellum, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves which result in essentially incurable changes in control of body motion and position. Changes due to tumors, alcoholism, syphilis, and those of unknown etiology are treated with remarkable accuracy considering the date of the book.
