In this second edition, Massa opens the book with a long letter to fellow physician Thomas Cademustus (fl. 1500), who was physician to Pope Paul III, in which he discusses syphilis and some of the cures Massa found useful in his practice. John Freind in his History of physick (see No. 778) quotes from this edition concerning the symptoms of syphilis and states that "the best Writer, I mean the person who seems to have the most experience, and to understand what he writes of best, is Nicolaus Massa; who was besides, one of the most skillful Anatomists of that age" (Vol. II, p. 371-2).
