Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 778

JOHN FREIND (1675-1728) The history of physick; from the time of Galen, to the beginning of the sixteenth century. Chiefly with regard to practice. Printed for J. Walthoe 1725-1727 Vol. I: 1st ed.; Vol. II: 2nd ed. Vol. I: [4] 312 pp.; Vol. II: 415, 72 pp. 19.1 cm.

Freind was the first English historian of medicine, and this work, which went into numerous editions and translations, may still be read with benefit, particularly concerning English medicine during the Renaissance. Freind dabbled in politics, and it was during his imprisonment for alleged Jacobite activities that he wrote this history, intended, as he says in his introductory remarks, "to pass away a few leisure hours."
