Billroth's highly popular and influential text was in its eleventh German edition by 1884 and was first translated into English and published in the United States in 1871 by Charles Elihu Hackley (1836-1925), Surgeon to the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and physician to the New York Hospital. Hackley took his first translation from the fourth German edition and this second revised American edition from the sixth German edition.
