Remak was born a Polish Jew and educated in Germany. Remak’s doctoral thesis of 1838, contains the discovery of grey, non-medullated nerve-fibers (fibers of Remak), and the continuous nature of axons and nerve cells within the spinal cord (Remak’s band, later named asix cylinder by Purkynje). He also demonstrated that the sympathetic ganglia are the actual centers of the autonomic (sympathetic) system. This thesis established his position as a great figure in 19th C. medicine. Present treatise on intestinal nerves marks one of several advances in neuroanatomy due to the author’s study. This work is dedicated to Alexander Von Humboldt and Johannes Muller.
