For more information on this author or work, see number: 1818
Remak was the first to describe non-medullated nerve fibers (see No. 1818). He demonstrated that proliferation of tissue by cell growth was through cell division and not endogenous formation, and he introduced the three-layer concept of embryo development. The son of a Polish Jew, Remak was denied a teaching career because of his religion and was forced to support himself through private practice. This monograph on pathology and diagnosis was written as a result of research done at the clinic of Johann Schönlein (1793-1864), noted German clinician and pathologist.
