Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1788

THOMAS MORTON (1813-1849) Engravings illustrating the surgical anatomy of the head and neck, axilla, bend of the elbow, and wrist, with descriptions. Taylor and Walton 1845 24 pp., 8 fold. plates. 25.5 cm.

For more information on this author or work, see number: 1787

Morton intended to publish a commentary with these eight plates of the head, neck, elbow, and wrist but, for some unexplained reason, was unable to complete it in time to be published with the plates. As a result, only the lithographed plates and descriptions of the anatomical structures are present in this work. The commentary together with the plates were published as part of The surgical anatomy of the principal regions of the human body (see No. 1789) in 1850. Morton had seven of the plates made from his original dissections and took the eighth from the 1834 edition of Friedrich Arnold's Icones nervorum capitis (see No. 1648).
