Morton was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne and began his medical career by serving an apprenticeship there. He completed his formal medical education at London's University College and was appointed house surgeon at what is now University College Hospital in 1835; becoming the first student to be placed on the hospital staff. He became full surgeon to the hospital in 1848 and the following year unexpectedly committed suicide. The present volume is one of a number of works on surgical anatomy Morton wrote during his brief lifetime. Most of the drawings, including five of the eight colored plates, were drawn by his brother, Andrew.
