The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1723

EDUARD MARTIN (1809-1875) Atlas of gynaecology and obstetrics. A. E. Wilde [1881] [68] pp., 60 plates (6 part col.). 54.4 cm.

The present work was translated and edited by William Adam Rothacker (1853-1896), professor of anatomy at the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery and pathologist to the Cincinnati Hospital. Rothacker comments in the Preface that the atlas consists chiefly of Martin's Hand-Atlas der Gynaecologie und Geburtshülfe and Maygrier's Nouvelles démonstrations d'accouchements (see No. 1261). In addition to illustrations from the works of Martin, professor of gynecology at the University of Berlin, and Maygrier, illustrations were taken from the works of such eminent authorities as Soemmerring, Cruveilhier, Du Verney, Sandifort, Pirogoff, Moreau, Hunter, Tiedemann, Boivin, Baillie, Virchow, Rokitansky, and many others. This large atlas is an impressive work, with text translated from Martin's book, and 510 figures depicting normal and abnormal anatomy of the female pelvis and genetalia, normal and abnormal parturition, and congenital fetal defects.
