The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1261

JACQUES PIERRE MAYGRIER (1771-1835) Nouvelles démonstrations d'accouchemens, avec des planches en taille-douce. Béchet 1822 x, 80 pp., 79 (misnumbered 80) plates. 41 cm.

Maygrier was one of a number of French obstetricians who followed the tradition of Jean Louis Baudelocque (see No. 1061 ff.) in refining the science of midwifery. This textbook contains a series of eighty large engravings, most of which were drawn by Antoine Chazal (1793-1854). They cover virtually every phase of childbirth including pelvic deformities, pelvimetry, transverse presentations, cesarean section, the use of forceps, and even a section on infant feeding and lactation. Many of the illustrations were used again or adapted by later authors.
