The first work of its kind to be published in the United States, this early pharmacopoeia, together with those of other New England states, provided the prototype for the first United States pharmacopoeia which was published in 1820 (see No. 1879). The purpose as stated in the Preface was "to point out those articles whose properties entitle them to be employed for the cure of diseases, with the best modes of preparing them."
