Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1879
-1820 The United States pharmacopeia. C. Ewer 1820 By the authority of the medical societies and colleges. 272 pp. 22.5 cm.
The first official United States pharmacopoeia was a truly cooperative effort, involving delegates from all of the medical societies and colleges then in existence. It was largely a compilation and refinement of local pharmacopoeias already in use and endeavored to "select from among substances which possess medicinal power, those, the utility of which is most fully established and best understood" (Preface).
