According to the Preface, written by Warren, the first of his anecdotes appeared in 1830 and the last in 1837. The first book was published in 1832 and numerous editions and translations followed. The book was also extensively pirated in the United States. This edition contains a considerable amount of new material that had not appeared in earlier editions.
