Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1699

SAMUEL WARREN (1807-1877) Passages from the diary of a late physician. William Blackwood and London, T. Cadell 1834 3rd ed. Vol. I: xii, 338 [2] pp.; Vol. II: [6] 354 pp. 17 cm.

Warren, Scottish author and physician, wrote this series of anecdotes to chronicle his early life as a student and later as a practicing physician. As he recounts his many experiences with patients--many of whom seem to have died--Warren continuously expounds the principles of morality. The work originally appeared serially in Blackwood's magazine and became so popular that the individual stories were collected and published in a book. Although popular among the general public, Warren's writings met opposition from the medical community who resented his disclosure of intimate professional matters.
