JOSEPH FRANçOIS MALGAIGNE (1806-1865) Operative surgery, based on normal and pathological anatomy. Blanchard and Lea 1851 vii [17]-565 [3] 32 pp., illus. 22.8 cm.

Malgaigne's work on operative surgery (see No. 1685) quickly became a very influential book and by the time of the fourth French edition in 1843 had already been translated into five continental languages. It was first translated into English at London in 1846 by the British physician, Frederick Brittain (1823-1891), who commented in the Translator's Preface, "it has excited some surprise that no translation of so celebrated a book has yet been offered to the British Profession." The present work is the first edition to be published in the United States.
