Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1685

JOSEPH FRANCOIS MALGAIGNE (1806-1865) Manuel de médecine opératoire. Germer Baillière 1834 [6] vi, 791 pp. 15 cm.

One of the most respected scholars in the history of medicine, Malgaigne was equally skillful as surgeon, anatomist, and surgical historian. Written on a wide variety of subjects, his works reflect the classical training and expository skills which he nurtured throughout his life. His influence on surgery is evidenced by the great number of surgical and anatomical terms associated with his name, and by the fact that many of his descriptions and techniques remain virtually unchallenged today. Malgaigne's editions of the works of Paré (see No. 273) and his numerous other works on medical history attest to his skill as an historian. This comprehensive work, Malgaigne's first important surgical treatise, covers a variety of topics including instruments and their proper use, cautery and ligatures, operative techniques of European and American surgeons, several gynecological and dental procedures, and amputations.
