Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1656

ROBERT FRORIEP (1804-1861) De lingua anatomica quaedam et semiotica. [n. publ.]; Tübingen: Typis Hofferi de l'Orme 1828 [6] 89 [1] pp., 8 plates each with guard sheet (4 col.), fold. plate. 31.5 cm.

During his early career, Froriep taught anatomy at the University of Berlin where he numbered Virchow (see No. 1890 ff.) among his pupils. Later in life he left medicine in order to take charge of the family publishing business in Weimar. The present work on the anatomy and more common pathological conditions of the human tongue was his doctoral dissertation at Bonn. Also included is a report of his study of the fetal development of the tongue. He was an artist of considerable talent as is shown in the eight plates which depict the tongue in health and disease. The University of Iowa Libraries' copy is one of the rare copies with Froriep's two-leaf curriculum vitae loosely inserted.
