The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1890

RUDOLF LUDWIG KARL VIRCHOW (1821-1902) Die Einheitsbestrebungen in der wissenschaftlichen Medicin. G. Reimer 1849 vi, 48 pp. 22.3 cm.

Virchow is not only one of the most representative figures in the history of medicine of the nineteenth century, but also the greatest pathologist of all time (Arturo Castiglioni, A history of medicine. New York, 1946. p. 695). Born in Pomerania, he was educated at the University of Berlin, and later taught for several years at the Pathological Institute of the Charité Hospital before political activities brought about his dismissal in 1849. He then spent seven years at the University of Würzburg, but was recalled to Berlin in 1856 as director of the Charité. This tract is a summary of Virchow's view of the relationship of medicine to social and political life.
