In the Preface to this edition Dunglison remarks "that the extraordinary sale, which the first edition of this work has met with, is most gratifying to him" (p. [v]). He was pleased with the reviews that had appeared in the periodical literature and endeavored to improve this edition by supplying updated material and eliminating omissions that had occurred in the first edition (see No. 1599). In Volume II Dunglison covers diseases of the genitourinary tract, the nervous system, sense organs, and a lengthy section on fevers. It is in this volume that he includes a letter from Charles Oscar Waters (1816-1892) of Franklin, New York that describes chronic hereditary chorea in adults. The classic description of this disease was provided by George Huntington (1850-1916) in 1872.
