Quain's Elements of anatomy was one of the most widely used texts of general anatomy for many years and, like his other anatomical works, was notable for its fine illustrations and logical arrangement of textual material. This first American edition of Quain and Wilson's anatomical plates was edited by Joseph Pancoast (see No. 1677), professor of anatomy at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. The publisher wanted to make the book more widely available and, in order to lower its price, reduced the book from folio (see No. 1550) to quarto size. Great care was taken to be certain that the reduced plates were accurate and they were compared with those of the English edition as well as with the work of Bourgery (see No. 1569 ff.), from which some copies were drawn. The book is divided into five sections: bones and ligaments, musculature, vascular system, nervous system, and viscera.
