Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1550

JONES QUAIN (1796-1865) [A series of anatomical drawings]. Printed for Taylor and Walton 1836-1842 Plates. 49.8 cm.

Quain was an anatomist and teacher of some note whose Elements of descriptive and practical anatomy (1828) went through eleven editions. Wilson (see No. 1729 ff.), who co-edited the second through the fifth volumes, was associated with Jones at London's University College and first came to wide national attention because of the role he played in the demise of flogging in the British army. This elaborate series of anatomical plates and accompanying descriptions ranks with the best nineteenth-century representations. The five volumes cover, respectively, the muscles, blood vessels, nerves, viscera, and bones and ligaments.
